The assailant, who was reportedly wearing army uniform, blew himself up among a group of soldiers at al-Sabin Square, near the presidential palace.

An al-Qaeda source told the BBC one of its members had carried out the attack.

It was the deadliest incident in the capital since President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi took power in February.

“We were in a parade, suddenly there was a huge explosion. Dozens of our men were killed. We tried to help them,” Col Amin al-Alghabati told the Reuters news agency.

“The suicide bomber was dressed in a military uniform. He had a belt of explosives underneath,” he added

A large suicide bombing in the Yemeni capital marks a significant step-up in the country’s troubles.

Recently there have been daily casualties in fighting in the mountainous southern desert and towns between government forces, backed by US military advisers, and militants linked to al-Qaeda. But Sanaa has been relatively quiet since the longstanding President Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down reluctantly.

So this is a message, almost certainly from al-Qaeda, to the new President, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, that he can expect no let-up in the fight between the army and the militants.

Coupled with the attack on US advisers to Yemen’s coast guard it will be a worrying development for Washington and the West, since Yemen is home to al-Qaeda’s most dangerous branch, responsible for building and sending a succession of sophisticated bombs onto planes bound for the US.

Al-Qaeda’s hidden war in Yemen
Another soldier, Ahmed Sobhi, told the Associated Press: “This is a real massacre. There are piles of torn body parts, limbs and heads. This is unbelievable.”

On fun-sized advice.

dearcoquette:

Dear Coquette,

Can you fall out of love with someone just as fast as you fell in love with them?
A helluva lot faster, actually.

Why am I obsessed with my boyfriend’s ex?
Because she used to touch your boyfriend’s penis.

Why would a woman claim to not be a feminist?
Because the world needs irony.

How do you cure a hangover?
Water and time.

Is doing a good thing still good if it’s to make you feel better?
If the good thing remains good independent of how it makes you feel, then yes.

I miss my ex-boyfriend who is a lying, spineless scumbag. I hate myself, how do I get over this?
Forgive yourself for missing him. (In other words, just quit hating yourself.)

What’s the best way to deal with emotional infidelity?
Honest communication.

How can you tell if a guy is using you for physical gratification or if he actually cares for you?
If I’m having consensual sex with a guy, it’s not possible for him to use me, because I accept personal responsibility for the decisions I make with my own body.

I’m 30 years old, in grad school, and I realized I’m just not that smart. What do I do?
Relax. Just do your best, try not to let people find out, and don’t use it as an excuse to quit.

He says he doesn’t want a relationship, but continues to tame my heart. Should I stop talking to him?
Nah, keep banging your head against that wall. Anyone who uses the phrase “tame my heart” needs to suffer a little bit longer.

How do I know when I love someone and I am not just lusting for them?
When you discover how little those two things have in common.

Is there even a point in being in a romantic relationship between the ages of 18 to 21?
No, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying.

How do you know the difference between extreme introspection and absolute self-absorption?
Introspection tests the ego. Self-absorption indulges it.

Have a question? Ask me anything …

Why Nations Fail should be required reading for politicians and anyone concerned with economic development. The authors’ discussions of what can and can’t be done today to improve conditions in poor countries are thought-provoking and will stimulate debate. Donors and international agencies try to “engineer prosperity” either by foreign aid or by urging poor countries to adopt good economic policies. But there is widespread disappointment with the results of these well-intentioned efforts. Acemoglu and Robinson pithily diagnose the cause of these disappointing outcomes in their final chapter: “Attempting to engineer prosperity without confronting the root cause of the problems—extractive institutions and the politics that keeps them in place—is unlikely to bear fruit.”

Greenpeace has been on the offensive against Apple this week, blasting the company for sourcing the power for its energy-intensive data centers from coal power plants. Today, Apple fired back with some remarkable facts, claiming it’s a clean and renewable energy superstar.

Apple says the data centers in Austin, Texas, Sacramento, California, Munich, Germany, and Cork, Ireland are already powered by 100 percent renewable energy. The company has also been granted regulatory approval to use renewable energy at its data center in Newark, California, which should be completed by February 2013.

But what’s more impressive are Apple’s initiatives in Maiden, North Carolina where the company is actually building two 100-acre solar farms that will fill 60 percent of the data center’s needs. This should be completed by the end of the year.

According to Apple it will be “the most environmentally sound data center ever built.” And on top of that, Apple says their forthcoming data center in Prineville, Oregon “will be every bit as environmentally responsible as our Maiden data center.”

US Declares Al Qaeda In Yemen (AQAP) Greatest Threat To National Security

US Declares Al Qaeda In Yemen (AQAP) Greatest Threat To National Security:
As Yemen grapples with the challenges of a fragile political transition, the US has escalated its military operations in the country.

Since 2001, hundreds of people have been killed in US drone strikes in Yemen - dozens of them civilians. But, according to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, a not-for-profit organisation based at City University in London, there has been a surge in US military activity in the country since pro-democracy protests began in 2011.

In the last two weeks, there have been 10 suspected US drone strikes. The latest, on Tuesday, reportedly killed at least 12 civilians. Drone strikes have been a central part of the US’ covert wars in both Pakistan and Yemen.

An estimated 322 drone strikes have been carried out in Pakistan, killing approximately 3,000 people, since 2004, according to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

Robert Mueller, the director of the FBI, said last week that al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), based in Yemen, is the biggest terrorist threat facing the US.

FUCK SCHOOL, BUY GUNS.

FUCK SCHOOL, BUY GUNS.

Bosnian War Criminal, Ratko Mladic, Trial Suspended Indefinitely

Bosnian War Criminal, Ratko Mladic, Trial Suspended Indefinitely:
Justice for the accused Butcher of Bosnia is once again on hold: Ratko Mladic’s war crimes trial was suspended today in only its second day, after it came to light that the prosecution had failed to disclose some evidence against Mladic to the defense as required. It’s not clear what the evidence was, notes CNN, nor how long the hiatus will last, but the omission ground to a halt the prosecution’s plans to focus today on the Srebrenica massacre. She had the children take a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stomp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty it was. She then told them to tell it they’re sorry. Now even though they said ...they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bullies another child, they may say they’re sorry but the scars are there forever. The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her the message hit home. Well DON'T.

Have You Ever Considered Quitting Coffee? Well DON'T.:

A new study of some 400,000 adults between ages 50 and 71 found that coffee may actually make you less likely to die. Over the course of 14 years, those who partook had a lower risk of death than those who didn’t. And the report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, gave top marks to those who drank an average of four to five cups daily: Those men had a 12% lower risk of death, compared to a 6% risk for those who had one cup. Women fared even better, with four- to five-cup drinkers seeing a 16% lower mortality rate.

Interestingly, the data initially seemed to show the opposite, reports the Los Angeles Times. But researchers realized that coffee drinkers are more likely to be smokers, too, and adjusted for that, leading to the more favorable results. And bonus: Those results applied to drinkers of mainly decaf, too. That led one epidemiologist not involved in the study to note that “if these are real biological effects, they seem to [have] to do with the substances in coffee that are not caffeine.” But since the research didn’t prove causation, he recommends further study. One tiring-sounding approach: Test each of coffee’s 1,000-or-so compounds to gauge their individual effects.

lexroc:

Alan DeWayne Blueford Murdered by Oakland...

thepeoplesrecord:

Alan DeWayne Blueford Murdered by Oakland Police Department

At or about midnight, May 6, 2012, Alan and 2 friends were standing on the corner of 90 th and Birch Street waiting for “some girls in a white chevy,” Alan described to his father, Alan Blueford, during a phone call. After the phone call, police officers approached Alan and his friends, with guns drawn. The police officers had been called to respond to another incident, but decided to stop Alan and his friends when they saw them because they “believed the young men had a concealed weapon.”

Alan ran down Birch Street, away from the police officers.

Approximately two blocks down Birch Street on the 9200 Block the officer chasing Alan murdered him by shooting him 3 times. The officer also shot himself.

Although, Alan had his brown wallet with his ID, Oakland Police Department never called to tell his parents he was shot and killed.

Alan’s two friends were detained for over 6 hours. After their release, one of the young men had the traumatic task of calling Alan’s parents and telling them Alan was shot and killed by an Oakland Police Officer.

Initial reports put out by OPD, stated that “a suspect” (Alan) and a police officer exchanged gun fire and the officer was shot in the stomach by the suspect and the suspect was shot by the officer. Both were said to have been rushed to Highland Hospital where Alan died and the police officer was expected to recover. OPD also included in their reports witness statements who said they saw Alan shooting. OPD reported that they retrieved Alan’s firearm at the scene.

Later OPD changed their story to state that the officer was shot in the leg and an investigation was in process to determine whether the officer was wounded by “friendly fire.”

Only one of the officers chased Alan.

What we now know is that Alan Blueford never shot the police officer, at the police officer, or anyone else. OPD changed their story yet again, admitting and confirming that THE OFFICER SHOT HIMSELF.

We also know that Alan was never rushed to Highland Hospital. Only the police officer. Alan’s body lied in the streets for approximately 4 hours.

Alan was shot multiple times by the police officer.

The family has reason to believe that Alan never had a firearm.
The family has reason to believe that Alan never caused the officer to be threatened. Alan’s body can be described as a shorter stature (approximately 5 ft 6 ½ inches) and thin built (140 lbs).

•

When Alan’s family learned of the claimed circumstances surrounding Alan’s death, we all knew that the facts were not true! Additionally, because they never called to confirm his death, we were sadly left with hope that the unnamed “suspect” was not Alan. He was joy to many people. We are suffering from a great loss.

Now OPD claims that the “victim” (no longer suspect) was a convicted felon on probation. His family will simply respond by saying felony probation does not describe Alan’s character. To describe Alan, you have to share that he 1] was a Christian; 2] worked with the disabled children at Skyline, one of whom described “Al” as his “bestfriend”; 3] began his mornings at Skyline High School by praying with his Godmother and Supervisor; 4] passed out candy at his
grandmother’s every Halloween; and 5] was well known by his family and friends as a respectful young man. But even more important is the fact that when the police officers decided not to respond to the call, but rather to bother Alan and his friends, all they knew is that they were 3 African-American young men. That’s why Alan was murdered.

Alan’s family is seeking justice for his death. We are determined to have this “incident” thoroughly investigated and all wrongful parties prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We ask that all of you support us by calling the City Councilman for District 7, Larry Reid, at 510-238-7007.
